The first settlements go back to 10.000 B.C.: traces of human presence were found in the caves in the areas of San Nicola and the Faraglione. Around the VIII century the Phoenicians settled in the area of San Nicola; later on Favignana has been the spot of a naval war between the Romans and the Carthaginians, with the predomination of Romans. Then followed barbarian invasions, and the Saracens that had built the first watch towers, converted in a fortress by Ruggero II, the Norman king. After that, was the time of the Angevins and of the Aragoneses until it came the time of C.
